Coffeehouses and the Muslim Public
Before the timeline, there was the coffeehouse: unruly, social, and central to the circulation of ideas.
Coffee traveled with argument. As coffeehouses spread through Ottoman cities, they made room for news, poetry, games, business, and the unpredictable chemistry of strangers talking.
Authorities often regarded these rooms with suspicion. Conversation created publics that could not be fully scripted from above.
The room and the feed
Our digital gathering places move faster and reach farther, but they lack the friction of a shared room. A face tempers abstraction. Time allows a thought to develop before it is judged.
The lesson is not nostalgia. It is design: healthy discourse needs places where curiosity is rewarded, memory is available, and disagreement does not require disappearance.
